Whose potential or ‘promise’ is seen and valued vs whose promise is erased or even condemned? In the US, we hear endless praises for the fetus and the young rapist alike, spoken in eerily similar terms: their future potential, the ways that potential might contribute to the greater good. But there’s no talk about the potential cut short by the person that’s forced to carry the burden.
